Finally the jinx has been broken and South Africa have won an ICC title after a long wait of 27 years. They beat Australia in the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 at Lord’s by five wickets on Day 4 to lift only the second ICC title in their whole history.
This was also their first ICC title in 21st century which came after a long and hard journey for last two years in the longest format of the game. Coming on to Day 4, South Africa were favorites and they didn’t panic on the fourth day. Aiden Markram carried his form, despite captain Temba Bavuma (66) getting out early.
However, Markram got out after playing a match-winning knock of 136 off 207 balls with 14 fours. Kyle Verreynne hit the winning run to take South Africa to their much-awaited ICC title. It was a dream come true moment, and a few South African players got emotional after the win.
South African fans were waiting for this moment and were cheering for their team. It was a complete effort from the Proteas. Apart from Markram, Kagiso Rabada (5/51 and 4/59) took nine wickets in the match. Australia tried hard but couldn’t get over the line.

Before this game, South African captain Temba Bavuma came with a record of not losing a single Test as captain. And he has certainly maintained his clean record as captain. However, this was the first defeat for Josh Hazlewood in a final of any tournament, while Pat Cummins also lost his first final as captain. South Africa’s win saw the whole cricket world praising them.

Aiden Markram was named the Player of the Match for his stunning century as he became the first South African batter to score a century in an ICC final. South Africa’s win certainly benefits this sport, as after some time, another team than Australia, India, or England won an ICC tournament.
