Ben Stokes announces his Retirement from One-Day International cricket

Ben Stokes, one of the best all-rounders in world cricket, has announced his retirement from one-day internationals. He will play his last ODI match against South Africa on Tuesday at Durham. This announcement came as a shock to the cricketing world as the all-rounder played against India in the three-match ODI series that ended on Sunday.

Stokes took to Twitter and wrote this message to his fans. He wrote, “I will play my last game for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format. This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way.”

“As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it’s not as hard dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less than from anyone who wears it.”

Notably, Ben Stokes has represented England in 104 ODI matches. He has scored 2,919 runs with the bat at an average of 39.44. He has also struck three centuries and 21 half-centuries. Stokes has also picked up 74 wickets at an average and economy of 41.6 and 6.02, respectively.

However, England won the 2019 ODI World Cup mainly because of Stokes’ heroics. He played an unbeaten knock of 84 against New Zealand in the finals, which helped England tie the match. Then England went on to win the finals. 

Earlier this month, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan, also announced his retirement from international cricket. Notably, Stokes will carry on to play in Test cricket. As he is captain of England’s test team.
