PCB confirms Babar Azam’s reappointment as white-ball captain of Pakistan’s Cricket Team

Pakistan Cricket Team and their management are certainly the most unpredictable team in the cricket world. You can’t say what will be the next thing happening in Pakistan cricket. On Sunday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Babar Azam has been reappointed as the captain of the team for ODIs and T20Is.

This move came after a lot of discussion between the board and Babar. Notably, he was removed from the captaincy in all three formats after Pakistan’s dismissal performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, where they won only four games out of nine. Shaheen Afridi was named the T20 captain a couple of months ago.

Shaheen led Pakistan in the five-match T20 series in New Zealand, which they lost 1-4, and then Shaheen’s Lahore Qalandars finished the PSL 2024 at the bottom. However, Muhammad Rizwan was another player who was the frontrunner in the race for the captaincy. But in a video uploaded by PCB, they confirmed that Babar Azam will be the next captain.

The video featured RCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and Babar. PCB tweeted, “Babar Azam has been appointed as white-ball captain. Following unanimous recommendation from PCB’s selection committee, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar as white-ball captain (ODI and T20I) of the Pakistan men’s team.”

Babar will be leading Pakistan in the upcoming five-match T20 series at home and will also lead in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. This will be the third consecutive time that he will lead Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. Last time, he led them to the final. Ahead of T20 World Cup, Pakistan Cricket team will play three T20Is against Ireland and then they will travel England for four T20Is leading up to the preparation for the mega event.
